Poker Glossary: 60 English–Chinese Terms Explained

Poker glossary

GGPoker's interface, training videos and forum threads mix English and Chinese terms. This alphabetical table lists the 60 most common with the Chinese equivalent and a one-line meaning. Use your browser's find function (Ctrl+F / ⌘F) to jump to a word.

Sorted alphabetically by the English term. Chinese renderings differ slightly between Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China; this table uses the forms common in Taiwan.

Frequently asked questions

What does nuts mean?

The best possible hand on the current board. Having the nuts means no hand can beat you.

What is the difference between a cooler and a bad beat?

A cooler is two strong hands colliding where nobody can fold; a bad beat is a big favourite losing to an unlikely hand.

What are VPIP and PFR?

VPIP is the percentage of hands where you voluntarily put money in; PFR is the percentage where you raise pre-flop. Healthy six-max values are about VPIP 22–26% and PFR 18–22%.

When does ICM matter?

On tournament bubbles and final tables. Chips do not convert to prize money linearly, so survival outweighs accumulation.

Is PVI a general poker term?

No. It is GGPoker's Player Value Index, a hidden multiplier applied to each player's rakeback. See the rake and rakeback page.
