After winning a package or deciding to buy in, the real work is logistics: visas, flights, hotels, cash and registration. This page covers practical preparation for four destinations from Taiwan: WSOP Las Vegas, APT Taipei, APT / WPT in Korea and GGPL in Japan. Budgets are rough 2026 estimates.
WSOP Las Vegas (26 May – 15 July)
| Item | Preparation | Cost (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Visa | ESTA online, at least 72 hours before departure | $21 |
| Flights | Taipei to Los Angeles / San Francisco then Las Vegas, or a one-stop routing | NT$35,000 – 60,000 return |
| Hotel | Venues are Horseshoe and Paris (mid-Strip). Walkable: Horseshoe, Paris, Flamingo, Planet Hollywood | $80 – $250 a night, more at weekends |
| Food | Venue restaurants are expensive; supermarkets and fast food behind the Strip are cheap | $50 – $100 a day |
| Registration | Create a player account on WSOP.com, pay at the cage or prepay online; passport required | Per event |
| Insurance | Travel medical insurance (US healthcare is very expensive) | NT$2,000 – 5,000 |
Venue procedure: show passport and WSOP player card at the cage, pay the buy-in, receive a seat card. Arrive 30 minutes early to find your table and seat. Breaks are 20 minutes every two hours, with a 60 to 90 minute dinner break. Day 1 often runs past midnight.
Tax: non-resident winnings are withheld at 30% and Taiwan has no treaty. A six-figure score in the $10,000 Main Event pays out at 70%. Factor it in before you register.
APT Taipei (22 April – 3 May, 12 – 29 November)
The lowest barrier for players from Taiwan: no visa, no flight, TWD accepted on site. Points to note:
- Venue and registration. The APT site announces the venue and registration, usually with online pre-registration. Bring ID or passport.
- A dense schedule. Dozens of events in two weeks, from a few hundred dollars to a main event in the thousands. Pick one or two target events rather than entering everything.
- ClubGG and GGPoker satellites start one to two months ahead; see Asian events and satellites.
- Legal status. APT Taipei is run under the organiser's compliance arrangements. Understand the rules before attending; see the law page.
Korea: APT Incheon, Jeju and WPT Seoul
| Item | Preparation | Cost (approx.) |

| Visa | Taiwanese passports are visa-free for 90 days; K-ETA online (some periods exempt under 2026 rules) | About ₩10,000 |
| Flights | Taipei–Incheon 2.5 hours; direct flights to Jeju | NT$8,000 – 15,000 return |

Korean casinos exclude locals, and foreigners enter with a passport. USD or KRW work inside, and most accept cards.
Japan GGPL venues
Not a tournament series but amusement poker bars, ideal for a detour during a Japan trip. Taiwanese passports are visa-free for 90 days. Locations and procedure are on Japan GGPoker LIVE venues. Budget: chips from ¥2,000 to ¥10,000; around ¥5,000 covers a full evening.
Pre-trip checklist
Six reminders for your first live event
- It is slow. 25 to 30 hands an hour; Day 1 can exceed ten hours. Bring water, snacks and a jacket (venues are cold).
- Practise chip handling. Push bets in one motion, no string bets, no splashing the pot.
- Words are binding. Saying "raise" or "all-in" commits you.
- Protect your cards. Cap them with a chip after looking; muck them if you leave the seat.
- Phones. Not while you are in a hand; fine after folding.
- Emotion. Live bad beats hurt more because the opponent is across the table. Decide your walk-away rule in advance.

Frequently asked questions
Do Taiwanese passport holders need a visa for the WSOP?
Taiwan is in the US Visa Waiver Program. Apply for ESTA online before departure ($21, usually approved within 72 hours, valid two years). State tourism as the purpose; a poker event is a leisure activity.
What does two weeks at the WSOP cost?
Excluding buy-ins: return flights Taipei–Las Vegas roughly NT$35,000 to 60,000, hotels near the venue $80 to $250 a night, food $50 to $100 a day. About NT$100,000 to 200,000 for two weeks, plus buy-ins.
Do packages include travel?
Depends on the package. Most WSOP Main Event packages cover only the $10,000 buy-in; some add accommodation or a travel stipend. The satellite lobby lists the contents.
Are US winnings taxed?
Non-resident gambling winnings in the US are subject to 30% withholding by default. Taiwan has no tax treaty with the US, so it cannot be waived. The venue issues Form 1042-S. Consult an accountant for large prizes.
How do I carry money to a live event?
Large venues accept cards or wire deposits. Cash over $10,000 must be declared on entry to the US. APT Taipei accepts TWD on site.
What mistakes do first-time live players make?
Poor chip handling and procedure, slow action, leaking information (expressions, talking), and not knowing the break schedule. Practise at GGPL in Japan or a local game before a major event.
